Area 51 is a highly classified United States Air Force facility near Groom Lake, in the Nevada desert. Its existence was only officially acknowledged in 2013, when declassified CIA documents described its role in testing spy planes such as the U-2 and the A-12 during the Cold War.
Because of its secrecy, Area 51 became the center of countless UFO and alien theories. The nearby tiny town of Rachel and the Little A'Le'Inn motel welcome alien fans, and the road that passes by is officially named the Extraterrestrial Highway.
Playing in Area 51 in MineMaps
Nobody can enter the base, and neither can Google's Street View cars, so MineMaps starts you in the open desert of the area as close as the imagery allows. The landscape is empty and flat, which makes it one of the best places in the game to build big.
Everything you build or destroy stays inside the game. If you turn on the Shared World, other players who visit Area 51 will see your blocks too, and you can send them a link to come and build with you.
Ideas to try
- Dig a secret underground base under the desert floor.
- Build a flying saucer out of blocks and leave it next to the road.
- Make a giant crop circle shape visible from the sky.
- Plant a hidden chest and send the location to a friend.
