Play hereAbout Pripyat and Chernobyl
Pripyat was founded in 1970 to house the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On 26 April 1986, reactor 4 exploded. The next day, the whole city of around 49,000 people was evacuated, and most residents were never allowed to come back.
Pripyat is still part of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone today. Its apartment blocks, school, swimming pool and the famous Ferris wheel that never opened have been left to nature for decades, which makes it one of the most striking ghost towns in the world.
