The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of Pisa Cathedral, on the Piazza dei Miracoli. Construction began in 1173, and the tower started to lean while it was still being built, because the soft ground could not support its weight on one side. Building stopped and restarted several times over almost two centuries.
By the end of the twentieth century the lean had become dangerous. Engineers closed the tower from 1990 to 2001 and carefully removed soil from under the higher side, reducing the lean to about four degrees. It is now considered stable for centuries.
Playing at the Leaning Tower of Pisa in MineMaps
MineMaps places you on the Piazza dei Miracoli facing the tower. Minecraft blocks always stand perfectly straight, which makes building a leaning tower here a real challenge.
Everything you build or destroy stays inside the game. If you turn on the Shared World, other players who visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa will see your blocks too, and you can send them a link to come and build with you.
Ideas to try
- Build a block tower that leans in the same direction as the real one.
- Build a giant hand of blocks that seems to hold the tower up, like every tourist photo.
- Rebuild the cathedral façade next to it.
- Dig under the tower to understand why the ground gave way.
