The Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland in Australia, is the largest coral reef system in the world. It is made of thousands of individual reefs and hundreds of islands stretching for about 2,300 kilometers, and it is so large that it can be seen from space.
It is home to thousands of species of fish, corals, turtles, sharks and rays, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching events that threaten the reef, which makes its protection a major scientific challenge.
