Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, with a summit at 8,849 meters above sea level according to the survey published by Nepal and China in 2020. It stands on the border between Nepal and the Tibet region of China, and is called Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan.
The South Base Camp, at about 5,360 meters, is where climbers on the Nepal side gather and acclimatize for weeks before going higher. Thousands of trekkers also walk to base camp every year without trying to reach the summit.
